When I started teaching at Delta State University (DSU) in 1989, I was appalled at the poor oral and written grammar skills of numerous students from all demographic groups. I learned that not just social work students but many students from all majors at DSU and across the nation had poor communication skills. That was even before texting reared its ugly head. Eventually I decided to stop talking about the problem and to do something about it. I developed some exercises to use in my classes (basic
topics like noun/verb agreement and correct tenses). Although my exercises were not polished, I saw some improvement in the students' skills. When I retired, I was asked to let DSU continue using my exercises. I got serious then about honing what I already had written and about adding needed material. After being edited by two consummate professors of English, my textbook has been published. Professional Grammar Simplified is currently being used by several social work programs across the country, as well as. As a professor emeritus of Delta State University, I am proud that they were the first school to begin using my book.
In the course of discussing this book with friends and colleagues, I recognized the need for a similar book without the social work content; thus I am pleased to announce the publication of Grammar Therapy for Applied Professional Communication: A Basic Guide to Standard English in 2014.
